Has your business become a treadmill?

Is your business giving you the lifestyle you want and deserve or is it a treadmill? Do you want to reignite your passion for the business? Many business owners got into business to have more income, be in control and have a better lifestyle, travel, and do whatever they want […]

Does your business need a reset?

Many business owners I speak to got into business to have more income, be in control and have a better lifestyle. They want to be able to spend time with family and friends, travel, and do whatever they want when they want.

Sadly that doesn't happen for many small and medium business owners. Business becomes their life and they feel like they are on a treadmill. Always running fast but going nowhere. They feel trapped and handcuffed to the business unable to sell and no FREEDOM to have the life they want. They forget why they got into business.

But wait! There is some good news.

When I start working with a business owner to turn their business into a saleable asset, it often reignites their passion for the business.

Business becomes enjoyable again and they start to get their life back. They develop an end game and selling the business for lots of money becomes real and possible at any time.

Do this! Ask yourself ...
If your business was a motor vehicle, what kind would it be? A Porsche Carrera - going fast and attracting a lot of attention. Maybe a Toyota Hilux - a steady and reliable workhorse. Perhaps a Mazda3 family saloon - not flashy and slowly depreciating. Hopefully, you are not driving an old jalopy! Not worth much and lacking in the ability go on much longer.

I use this question in my Business Owners Taking Action mentoring group.

The answers I get are fascinating and tell me a lot about how people view their business. And then I ask, "Wouldn't you rather be driving something much better?"

Unless you want your business to be your life (some people do, and that is OK) then you need to be developing your business into a valuable and saleable asset that attracts attention from prospective buyers.

Just as a Porsche or Ferrari gets people's attention, you want your business to get potential buyers' attention. The ideal situation for a business owner looking to exit their business is to have multiple buyers wanting their business. Multiple bidders in an auction can really drive the price up. But don't forget my favourite maxim "A business that's ready for sale is well worth keeping!"

Imagine a time when your business is running profitably without you having to work in it. You have the freedom and time to scale it up, increase its value and be able to exit with a big payday at any time.

Now you have options and are in control of the process. Do you sell your "Ferrari" or just keep enjoying the ride?

How do you turn your business into a valuable saleable asset that runs profitably without you being there?

You need to go through a NOW - WHERE - HOW process. It starts with acknowledging where you are NOW. My Free Saleability Score Assessment exercise will get you started on the NOW.

The WHERE is a personal thing but often comes down to one of two things: either TIME or MONEY. Maybe you want to be able to exit by a certain TIME to go on an do other things. Maybe it's a case of when your business has a certain value and you have the MONEY to retire or do something else. It could be that you just want an ongoing income stream from the business without you being there all the time. "A business that's ready for sale is well worth keeping!"

The HOW comes down to getting your business running like a Swiss watch!

To understand the HOW read my blog Why Have Your Business Ready For Sale.
